two years on the road…

Two years on the road has taken its toll on my bike. Despite a significant amount of work on my bike in Alajuela, my rear hub has self-destructed and all the pedalling in the world produces no result right now.

The hub disaster occurs not far out of Almirante and it's mostly a down hill run. On the gentle inclines Tom lends a hand and pushes me. (Photo: Sarah Hedges)

At the local bike shop we manage to find enough tools to pull the hub to pieces but it is to no avail - the free wheel mechanism is unrepairable. (Photo: Sarah Hedges)

So, having finally made my escape from Costa Rica, I am now faced with the prospect of having to return to find spare parts to get me mobile again. In the meantime, I’m hanging out on Panama’s Caribbean islands in the state of Bocas del Toro.

Bocas has it's charms. It could be worse. I may find myself having to while away the time swimming, diving and hanging around on marinas trying to find passage to South America or beyond. (Photo: Sarah Hedges)

Recently I’ve been travelling with Sarah and Tom, a mostly Australian couple who have ridden on dirt down the Great Divide from Canada. We parted company this morning but you can check out a few of their recent blog posts for some photos of shared adventures here and here.

Sarah floating away.

Great to see some photos at last, even if they’re on someone else’s website. You are looking good despite the bike’s tribulations. xx
